about

Written and recorded at the Birdhouse (Vancouver, Canada) during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, April 12 - 27 and mixed/mastered thru to May 23, 2020. Each piece started tracking improvised "performance" beds using a Prophet 6 sync'd with a Tempest, MFB Tanzbär and a free floating Digitakt for field recordings and electroacoustic textures. From about 30 takes I chose to work on these 6, and they became the foundation of Psychology Today. The first overdub was a 1973 Roland SH3 monophonic synthesizer (plus a Knas Ekdahl Moisturizer - an exposed spring reverb unit coupled with a nasty resonant filter). From there a flood of instruments came down from shelves and out of closets, literally gushing forth to complete the work. Perhaps as a result of being cooped up inside so much I found myself craving outdoor sounds, taking several trips out to record bird in Stanley Park (Magical Thinking), percussion outside of Science World (Emotion Proof, Fortress Vows and Maybe Tomorrow), and recording a snare drum in an architectural echo chamber (Fortress Vows). Playing the cello was a particularly enjoyable hour, as was patching together a couple different guitar FX chains - and the Framus! First electric guitar I bought back in '91. Sounded awesome - maybe it's those flat wound jazz strings. Coco (Martin 000-15s) on Maybe Tomorrow recorded DI with an LR Baggs Session preamp and then run through an old reel to reel and split between left and right channels - that was a nice surprise. All overdubs recorded in one or two takes.
